Osteopathy

Osteopathic medicine is a recognised system of diagnosis and manual therapy for a wide range of medical conditions. It respects the relationship of body, mind and spirit in health and disease and lays emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body and the body’s intrinsic tendency for self-healing.

Osteopathic practitioners use a wide variety of therapeutic manual techniques to improve physiological function and/or support homeostasis that has been altered by
somatic (body framework) dysfunction, i.e. skeletal, arthrodial and myofascial
structures; and related vascular, lymphatic, and neural elements.

Who is it for?

It is used to help children and adults alike in many life-improving ways, to treat acute and also chronic complaints. Preventively, it can help reducing the need for medication in certain cases, improve posture and bio-mechanics, and generally strengthens the body.

The consultation

When you first visit the practice, the osteopath will take a detailed case history about your presenting complaint, medical history and lifestyle. This will be followed by the physical examination. Using all this information, the osteopath will then be able to explain to you why the symptoms have presented themselves in such a way. Finally, a treatment plan will be discussed with you and you will be treated accordingly with the highest standards of osteopathic care.

The treatment

Osteopaths use touch, mobilisation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tensions, to optimise the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to support the body’s innate healing mechanism. The osteopath may also provide advice on posture and exercises to support the recovery process and prevent symptoms recurring.
